Ozone Generator Buying Guide

Buying the Best Ozone Generator for a Home, Apartment or Condo

Typical Home/Apartment/Condo Odors
Pet odors, cigarette smoke, cooking odors, body odor, musty basement smell.

About These Odors
These carbon-based odors get trapped within the voids in fabric, carpet, upholstery, curtains, fabric, even wall paint. The odors can also form a thin film over fibers, called adsorption. What you can smell is only a small part of a larger odor source, which is why odors persist even after traditional cleaning. Ozone is effective because it spreads and saturates these materials just as the odors did, but attacks and oxidizes odors, killing mold in the process and leaving the material scent-free with no chemical residue.

SHOCK Compact 16K Ozone MachineRecommended Ozone Generators for Treating Homes, Apartments and Condos
Homes up to 800 sq.ft: Shock Junior 8K, Shock Compact 16K (best value)
Homes up to 1,600 sq. ft: Shock Compact 16K, Shock Pro-D 32K (best value)
Homes up to 3,200 sq. ft: Shock Pro-D 32K, Shock Pro-D 64K (best value)
Homes over 3,200 sq ft: Shock Pro-D 64K, Shock Cannon 96K (best value)

Procedure for Treating Homes, Apartments and Condos
First, clean and vacuum or mop the area to be treated. For pet odors, spray vinegar and water (or a retail cleaning product) on pet urine stains in carpets. Extensive pet odor may require a commercial carpet cleaning first as heavy pet odors may indicate that pet urine has crystalized. Open all interior doors including kitchen cabinet and closet doors, and position fans around the home to help distribute ozone evenly. If the home has a central air system, position the ozone generator near the central air return and open the individual room supply ducts in spaces to be treated. Set the HVAC system's fan on manual to run continuously. If the home does not have air ducts, position the ozone generator on a table or chair in a central location with additional fans running to help the ozone circulate. Set the ozone generator's timer for the run time specified in the manual, start the ozone machine and leave the area being treated.

Place warning signs on the entry doors when an ozone treatment is in progress to prevent people from unknowingly entering the building.Wait at least 30 minutes after the ozone treatment to re-occupy. After the ozone treatment, open doors and windows to speed up the ozone reversion process to normal air. If the home has multiple levels and a single ozone generator is being used to remove odors, the optimal method is treat one level at a time by sealing off the other levels. Otherwise, use a series of fans positioned to help circulate the air in all directions and spread ozone into all rooms. Note that professional ozone remediators should run at least one ozone generator on each level simultaneously to complete the project quickly and uniformly

Extensive pet odors may require a commercial carpet cleaning first as heavy pet odor may indicate crystalized urine. Seal off the area to be treated by closing doors or by taping a plastic barrier against the walls and ceiling if needed. Open closet and cabinet doors within the treatment area so that ozone can spread to those spaces. Set the ozone generator's timer for the run time specified in the manual, start the ozone machine and vacate the area being treated. If you are going to leave the property and return later, place a warning sign indicating that an ozone treatment is in progress to prevent others from unknowingly entering the treatment area.Wait at least 30 minutes after the ozone treatment to re-occupy. After the ozone treatment, open doors and windows if conditions permit, to speed up the ozone reversion process to normal air.

Buying the Best Ozone Generator for a Standard Car or Truck

Typical Vehicle Odors
Cigarette smoke, oil/gasoline, body odor, pet odor, stale food, musty smell

About These Odors
These carbon-based odors get trapped within the tiny voids in fabric, foam, carpet, leather and vinyl.

Shock PRO-D Ozone MachineRecommended Ozone Generators for Treating Standard Cars and Trucks
Shock Compact 16K, Shock Pro-D 32K* (best value)

Why These Models
These 2-position ozone generators produce the right amount of ozone to quickly treat the average vehicle. They have quiet but powerful fans to distribute concentrated ozone through an optional duct attachment that can stretch through a vehicle window. They are rugged, won't rust are stackable and easy to store. They open with two latches for cleaning and plug into ordinary extension cords so you never have to replace a twisted and frayed power cord.

Procedure for Treating Standard Passenger Vehicles
First, clean and vacuum the vehicle. Pass the ozone generator's discharge hose through a partially open car window and close off the rest of the window opening. Leave a small gap so that some air can escape. The ozone generator should be positioned outside of the vehicle on the fresh air side. The exception is the Shock Pro-D 32K* which can be placed inside the vehicle and ducted to the outside to draw in its fresh air supply. Start the vehicle and set the vehicle's climate system fan to maximum recirculated air and position the vents in either the defrost or the passenger-facing direction. The climate system will help circulate ozonated air and clean the air vents. Maintain a vehicle temperature below 75°F with low humidity. Set the ozone generator's timer for the run time specified in the manual, start the ozone machine and leave the area being treated. Wait at least 30 minutes after the ozone treatment to re-occupy. You can speed up the ozone reversion process by opening the doors and windows after the ozone treatment if weather conditions permit.

Buying the Best Ozone Generator for a Large or Recreational Vehicle

Typical Vehicle Odors
Cigarette smoke, oil/gasoline, body odor, pet odor, stale food, musty smell

Recommended Ozone Generators for Treating Large SUVs, Trailers, Vans, Campers and Boats

Shock Pro-D 32K, Shock Toolbox 48K (best value)

Why These Models
These Shock ozone generator models produce the right amount of ozone and have innovative designs to handle many jobs. The Shock Toolbox 48K is BoiE's professional model designed to pre-treat vehicles with ozone in hard-to-reach spaces. Wearing a mask and safety glasses, you can use the Toolbox cleaning attachments to apply pressurized ozone directly into carpets, upholstery and vehicle headliners prior to the ozone treatment. The Shock Pro-D 32K can be placed outside and blast ozonated air into the vehicle, or placed inside the vehicle and draw its fresh air supply through a duct that terminates outside the vehicle.

Procedure for Treating Large SUVs, Trailers, Vans, Campers and Boats
First, clean and vacuum the vehicle. Pass the ozone generator's discharge hose through the top gap of a partially open window or another high opening in the vehicle. If the discharge hose must pass through a door or hatch, tape a plastic barrier in place around the opening to isolate the area to be treated. Leave a small gap near the highest point of the vehicle for displaced air to escape. The ozone generator should be positioned outside of the vehicle on the fresh air side. The exception is the Shock Pro-D 32K* which can be placed inside the vehicle and ducted to the outside to draw in its fresh air supply. Do not seal the vehicle tightly or ozone will not circulate as effectively. If applicable, start the vehicle and set the vehicle's climate system fan to maximum recirculated air and position the vents in either the defrost or the passenger-facing direction. The climate system will help circulate ozonated air and clean the air vents. Maintain a vehicle temperature below 75°F with low humidity. Set the ozone generator's timer for the run time specified in the manual, start the ozone machine and vacate the area being treated. Wait at least 30 minutes after the ozone treatment to re-occupy. You can speed up the ozone reversion process by opening the doors and windows after the ozone treatment if weather conditions permit.

Why Use a Hose?
A common question people ask is why not place the ozone generator inside the vehicle and use the air inside? The answer is that an ozone generator recirculating ozonated air within a confined space will stop producing ozone and will start to generate undesirable byproducts that can cause damage or leave a bad odor (a.k.a "burnt ozone"). Even with the windows kept partially open the ozone machine will still struggle to produce enough ozone to reach a germ-killing level that spreads evenly because outside air is entering the vehicle and diluting the ozone concentration. Conversely, pushing ozonated air into a vehicle causes it to fill with the heavier ozone gas and push out the lighter air through gaps in the windows. There are cautionary stories about people who left ozone generators running in vehicles for too long and had to deal with a burnt ozone smell that lasted for weeks.

Buying the Best Ozone Generator for a Hotel Room or Motel Room

Typical Odors in Hotel Rooms & Motel Room Odors
Cigarette smoke, body odor, pet odor, mold, mildew, fungus and other organic smells

About These Odors
These carbon-based odors get trapped within the small voids in fabric, carpet, upholstery, curtains, fabric and paint. The odors can also form a thin film over fibers, called adsorption. What you can smell is only a small part of a larger odor source, which is why odors persist even after traditional cleaning. Ozone is effective because it spreads and saturates these materials just as the odors did, but attacks and oxidizes odors, killing mold in the process and leaving the material scent-free with no chemical residue.

ozone generators for hotels and motelsRecommended Ozone Generators for Treating Hotel Rooms or Motel Rooms
Shock Compact 32K, Shock Pro-D 32K (best value)

Why These Models
These 2-position Shock ozone generators have quiet but powerful fans to quickly distribute concentrated ozone upwards towards the ceiling in a hotel room without needing additional fans. Shock ozone machines are rugged, won't rust and stack easily on shelves or on the floor. They accept ordinary extension cords as a power cord, so you don't have to worry about replacing a twisted and frayed permanently-connected cord.

Procedure for Treating Hotel Rooms or Motel Rooms
First, clean and vacuum or mop the area to be treated. Turn off the room's exhaust ventilation fan or cover with plastic to prevent ozone from entering a common exhaust ventilation system and possibly drifting into other rooms under negative air pressure. If conditions permit and the room is on the leeward side of the building, open a window slightly to relieve any negative air pressure. Position the ozone generator in a central area on the highest stable surface such as a chair or table, with the ozone generator's discharge direction pointed upwards towards the ceiling. Set the ozone generator's timer for the run time specified in the manual, start the ozone machine and leave the area being treated. Post a warning sign on the entry doors when an ozone treatment is in progress to prevent people from unknowingly entering the room. Wait at least 30 minutes after the ozone treatment to re-occupy. After the ozone treatment, open the window (if conditions permit) to speed up the ozone reversion process to normal air. A 15-minute ozone treatment from a BoiE 32K ozone generator will get results that would take other ozone machines over an hour.

Buying the Best Ozone Generator for a Gym, Locker Room or Fitness Center

Typical Odors in Gyms, Locker Rooms and Fitness Centers
Foot smell, body odor, musty odor from showers, dirty clothing, fungus and other organic smells

About These Odors
These carbon-based odors get trapped within the small voids in fabric, carpet, concrete, ceiling tiles and painted surfaces. The odors can also form a thin film over a surface, called adsorption. What you can smell is only a small part of a larger odor source, which is why odors persist even after traditional cleaning. Ozone is effective because it spreads and saturates these materials just as the odors did, but attacks and oxidizes odors, killing mold in the process and leaving the material scent-free with no chemical residue.

ozone generators for fitness centersRecommended Ozone Generators for Treating Gyms, Locker Rooms and Fitness Spaces
Shock Pro-D 64K, Shock Cannon 96K (best value)

Why These Models
These Shock ozone generators have quiet but powerful fans to quickly distribute large amounts of concentrated ozone into larger areas. They can be ducted into a specific area if needed. They accept ordinary extension cords as a power cord so you don't have to worry about replacing a twisted and frayed cord.

Procedure for Treating Gyms, Locker Rooms and Fitness Centers
First, clean and vacuum or mop the area to be treated. Ozone generators must be run during non-business hours when the facility is vacant and after the staff has cleaned and left for the day. The last worker out of the building should start the ozone machine's timer. Position the ozone generator(s) on the highest stable surface in a central location. Open cabinets and lockers so that ozone can easily reach those spaces. Position additional fans to increase air movement. Set the ozone generator's timer for the run time specified in the manual, start the ozone machine and leave the area being treated. Place warning signs on entry doors that an ozone treatment is in progress to warn employees from accidentally entering the building. For safety, wait at least two hours to re-occupy a large facility after an ozone treatment unless you have an ozone meter to verify safe levels for workers and customers. After the ozone treatment, windows can be opened to speed up the ozone reversion process to normal air.

Buying the Best Ozone Generator for Cleaning an Air Duct

Typical Odors in Air Ducts
Mold, mildew, fungus, musty odor, smoke and other organic smells

About These Odors
These carbon-based odors get trapped within the small voids in ductwork and insulation. They can also accumulate as a thin surface film through a process called adsorption. What you can smell is only a small part of a larger odor source. Ozone is effective because it spreads to the same areas the odors did, then attacks and oxidizes odors, killing mold in the process and leaving the ductwork scent-free with no chemical residue.

Recommended Ozone Generators for treating Residential and Commercial Air Ducts
Shock Toolbox 48K, Shock Pro-D 64K, Shock Cannon 96K (best value)

Why These Models
These ozone generators have high-static pressure blowers that can distribute concentrated ozone throughout the system. They also have duct attachment hose options to move ozone into the HVAC system.

Procedure for Treating Residential and Commercial Air Ducts
Connect and seal the ozone generator to the central air system's main return air duct so that ozonated air is introduced to the ductwork at a single point. Cover or close any other air return vents, shut all the air supply vents and remove the furnace air filter. The supply vents should leak some air to allow ozonated air to more easily spread throughout the HVAC ductwork. You may need to open the supply ducts slightly. In some cases, supply ducts can be connected with flexible duct to nearby return ducts, which is an ideal configuration because it creates a closed loop where the ozone can concentrate.

Set the central air system fan on manual to run continuously. Set the thermostat to maintain an indoor temperature no higher than 70°F and with low humidity. Set the ozone generator timer to run in cycles depending on the size and scope of the project. If the building has multiple levels on a single central air unit, connect the ozone generator to an air return on the highest level, as ozone will sink and alternate treatments using different air returns. Wear appropriate PPE or vacate the area as escaping ozone will start to spread throughout the building. However, the majority of the ozone will concentrate inside the ducts. If you are going to leave the property during the ozone treatment and come back later, place a warning sign on the entry doors indicating that an ozone treatment is in progress to prevent others from unknowingly entering the treatment area.Wait at least 30 minutes after the ozone treatment to re-occupy. After the treatment, open doors and windows if conditions permit, to speed up the ozone reversion process.

Buying the Best Ozone Generator for Flood Damage Restoration

Typical Odors Following Flood Damage
Musty odor, sewage smell, mold, mildew, fungus, off gassing and decomposition

About These Odors
These carbon-based odors get trapped within the small voids in fabric, carpet, concrete, ceiling tiles and painted surfaces. The odors can also form a thin film over a surface, called adsorption. What you can smell is only a small part of a larger odor source, which is why odors may persist even after a thorough cleaning. Ozone is effective because it spreads and saturates these materials just as the odors did, but attacks and oxidizes odors. During the ozonation process, mold, mildew and bacteria are sterilized, leaving materials safe and scent-free with no chemical residue.

ozone generator for flood damageRecommended Ozone Generator for Treating Flood Damage
BoiE UltraViolet 10K (best value) Also See Hydroxyl Generators

Why This Model
The BoiE UltraViolet 10K is efficient at producing ozone in high heat and humid conditions while corona discharge generators are not. The UltraViolet is rugged, powerful and has a high-static pressure fan along with an included duct attachment to deliver concentrated ozone into a treatment enclosure.

Procedure for Treating a Flood-damaged Area
Once the water has been removed from a flooded area and the drying process has begun using fans and dehumidifiers, run the UltraViolet 10K on a timer between work shifts to sterilize airborne mold spores and to prevent mold colonization while materials are drying out. Place warning signs on all the doors when an ozone treatment is in progress to warn workers and others from accidentally entering the building. Use a programmable timer to turn off the ozone generator at least an hour before the next work shift begins so that the ozone has a chance to revert back into normal air. At the beginning of the shift, use an ozone meter to monitor ozone levels to assure worker safety. The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL), averaged over an eight-hour work shift, for ozone is 0.10 ppm. If the ozone level is too high, open doors or windows to ventilate the area until the ozone level is 0.10 ppm or lower before the work area is occupied, or require workers to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). In most cases this will be at minimum an N95 Organic Vapor Respirator.

Buying the Best Ozone Generator for Fumigating a Honey Bee Hive

Typical Odors and Problems with Recycled Honey Bee Hives
Fungus, bacteria, pesticide residue, wax moths, parasites, larva and eggs

Recommended Ozone Generator for Treating Recycled Honey Bee Hives
BoiE UltraViolet 10K (best value)

Why This Model
Bee keepers can fumigate empty honey bee hives prior to re-use, by generating ozone under very warm and humid conditions over 100°F / 75% RH, well beyond the operating range of most ozone generators. The BoiE UltraViolet 10K is efficient at producing ozone in high heat and humid conditions because it uses ultraviolet light rather than corona discharge. An ultraviolet light ozone generator is the only type of ozone generator that will work for honey bee hives. (See Ozone Generator FAQs). The UltraViolet 10K breaks apart oxygen molecules in the air and produces pure ozone without generating byproducts such as nitrogen oxides. The UltraViolet is rugged, powerful and has a high-static pressure fan along with an included duct attachment to deliver concentrated ozone into an ozone treatment enclosure.

Procedure for Decontaminating Honey Bee Combs Before Reuse
Create a plastic treatment enclosure for the honey bee hive inside a climate-controlled room that incorporates a space heater to raise the room temperature to the required level. An over-sized plastic garment bag can sometimes be used for an ozone treatment enclosure. In southern climates or during the summer, a naturally warm space such as an attic or an outdoor shed can be used to place the treatment enclosure with the honey bee hive inside. On very warm, sunny days when heat can build up inside the treatment enclosure to raise the interior temperature (similar to a car sitting in the sun), the procedure can be performed outdoors.

The ozone treatment enclosure with honey bee hive inside should leak a small amount of air out the top to allow diluted air inside to be displaced as concentrated ozone sinks to the bottom of the enclosure. The room containing the ozone treatment enclosure should be vented so that accumulating waste ozone can escape. Connect the UV ozone generator's flexible duct hose through the top of the treatment enclosure. Run the ozone generator for the recommended number of hours to kill pests, larva, eggs and highly-resistant pathogens within the honey bee hive before returning the sterilized comb to service. Use a programmable timer to turn off the ozone generator when the treatment time is finished. Place warning signs on all the doors when an ozone treatment is in progress and wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), typically a N95 Organic Vapor Respirator, if entering the treatment area while the ozone generator is running.Wait at least an hour after the ozone treatment of the honey bee hive before reoccupying the treatment area.

Buying the Best Ozone Generator for Dry Washing Clothing, Fabric and Upholstery

Typical Odors from Clothing, Fabric and Upholstery
Sweat, smoke, body odor and other organic smells in clothing, footwear, jackets, upholstered furniture and sports equipment

About These Odors
These carbon-based odors get trapped within the small voids in fabric and porous materials. The odors can also form a thin film over surface fibers, a process called adsorption. What you can smell is only a small part of a larger odor source, which is why odors persist even after traditional cleaning and airing out. Ozone is effective because it spreads and saturates these materials just as the odors did, but attacks and oxidizes odors, sterilizing and leaving the material scent-free with no chemical residue.

Recommended Ozone Generators for Ozone Dry Washing
AC-powered: Shock Junior 8K
12 Volt-Powered: Sportsman DC Junior 500, Mobile DC 3500, Sportsman DC Pro 4500

Why These Models
These ozone generators produce the right amount of ozone for small spaces and can each be connected to various-sized ozone treatment enclosures or to an ozone closet using a flexible duct. The 12 Volt units have the advantage of being used on-the-go and can also be connected to AC power.

Procedure for Ozone Dry Washing
Create an ozone treatment enclosure using a plastic garment bag or large duffle bag. Position the ozone generator so that it sits or hangs next to the ozone treatment enclosure. A high position is preferable because ozone is heavier than normal air and sinks to the bottom. Connect the ozone generator's duct hose through or near the top of the ozone enclosure. If connected to a large ozone closet or sports equipment room, the ozone generator can remain at floor-level so long as a fan is kept running inside the room or closet to distribute the ozonated air upwards. Otherwise, the heavier ozone gas will concentrate near the floor. Set the ozone generator's timer for the run time specified in the manual, start the ozone machine and leave the area being treated. The space around the ozone enclosure should be well-ventilated or outside of the living space because ozone will leak from the enclosure as the air inside is displaced by the incoming air.Wait at least 30 minutes after the ozone treatment to re-occupy.

Why Use A Hose?
A common question asked is why not place the ozone generator inside the enclosure if it fits? While this may be possible, in a confined space an ozone generator recirculating ozonated air long enough will stop functioning properly and will start to generate undesirable byproducts that may cause damage or leave the contents with a bad odor.

Buying the Best Ozone Generator for Hunting

Typical Odors that Ozone Can Mask while Hunting
Sweat, breath, dandruff, food, cooking, body odor and other organic smells in clothing and footwear

Recommended Ozone Generators for Hunter Scent Masking
12 Volt DC-Powered: Sportsman DC Junior 500, Sportsman DC Hunt 1000, Sportsman DC Pro 4500

Why These Models
These ozone generators are all battery-powered with quiet operation and are designed to be used in outdoor remote locations without access to AC powers. Sportsman models run quietly and produce the right amount of ozone to mask human odor, are rugged and can be hung anywhere. These ozone generators are especially effective when hunting whitetail downwind from a stand. You can connect Sportsman models to any external 12 volt battery or purchase a power pack from BoiE.

Procedure for Using Continuous Ozone While Hunting
Position the ozone generator higher than the tree stand or hunting blind as ozone is heavier than normal air and will drift downwards. As the ozone generator runs, it continuously oxidizes human scent-containing molecules and other organic compounds rendering human odor unrecognizable to wildlife downwind of the ozone machine. While there are many hunting products that reduce or cover hunter scent before leaving for a hunt, continuous ozone production is the only method that masks human odors generated during the hunt. Ozone is primarily effective for masking scent downwind of a tree stand or hunting blind.

Buying the Best Ozone Generator for Water Purification

Typical Odors and Problems with Water
Bacteria, viruses, parasites, pesticide residue, sulfur odor

ozone for waterRecommended Ozone Generators for Water Ozonation
AC-powered: Shock Aqua 2000
12 Volt-powered: Aqua DC 1000

Why These Models
These ozone generators produce enough ozone to sterilize and purify 20-40 liters of water in an hour respectively, which is more than enough for the average family. They are up to 10 times more powerful than other units found online. Both units are powerful enough to control algae growth in a large inground pool. The 12 Volt Aqua DC model can be used on-the-go or during a power outage and can also be connected to AC power.

Procedure for Water Ozonation
Contaminated drinking water can be deadly. Ozone kills viruses and bleach-resistant parasites such as giardia and cryptosporidium on contact. Ozonated water is odor-free, better tasting, adds no chemicals and is safer to drink than chlorinated water. Simply connect the air line into the ozone generator and submerge the bubbler on the other end into the water to be purified. Run the water ozone generator on a timer for the duration specified in the manual. Use in well-ventilated areas. Ozonated water has many uses in addition to drinking. In a spray bottle kept cold with ice, ozonated water will disinfect household surfaces better than bleach and with no residue. A sink full of ozonated water will remove bacteria, pesticides and pathogens from submerged fruits and vegetables, meat and poultry. Other uses range from mouthwash to bath water. Water ozone generators are also an essential tool when prepping for natural disasters.

*What is a Shock Ozone Treatment?
A minimum ozone concentration of 10 parts per million is required to reach a fully-effective germ/virus/mold-killing level as established by the EPA's National Risk Management Research Laboratory.¹ Don't be fooled by manufacturers that claim to shock treat large spaces with a small or unspecified amount of ozone. An ozone generator must produce around 1,000 mg/hr of ozone to shock treat an average 100 sq. ft. room. Low-power ozone generators will leave an ozone scent but odors will quickly return.
